Jaquita Hawthorne : Jill Greenberg

I chose Jill Greenberg because I like the pain and sadness she shows in her portraits of children.
I photographed my nephew trying to make an emotional portrait. I wanted to show a different type of emotion.

Maggie Mendelson -- Irving Penn

Irving Penn is one of my favorite photographers because his all around style is so simple, yet unforgettable. His portrait work is generally very minimalist with sharp images that have lots of shadows. When choosing an image to emulate I tried to disregard who was in the picture and instead concentrated on the composition, lighting, and general feel/emotion in the picture. This particular portrait is a prime example of Irving Penn’s portrait work, because it is complex and engaging in its simplicity. Although the lighting is a bit off, I think I did good job re-creating the feeling/emotion of the portrait even though it is a picture of such a public figure.

Jeff Levy - Susan Derges

I chose Susan Derges becuase I thought her pictures captured the perfect moment in time. The picture with the moon almost give you a utopia feel to the world. My picture is an emulation of that one becuase it captures the moment in time when the moon is shown through the branches of a tree but it is not dark enough to only see the moon. I think my picture is very similar and almost better than the original one becuase it is more interesting and splendid

Vaniesa Bent-Bernice Abbott

The reason I chose Bernice Abbott was because I like the urban landscape scene that she photographed and I'm a big fan of black and white photography. I liked how she really paid close attention to the fine detail in her work.

The form of the building is very interesting because it gives great distinction about the place and time that the photograph was taken.

Callie Veiga; Brassai

I chose this image because of the contrast of light and dark on the womans body and how she leaves her own small shadow in this piece. The image itself is innocent and has an innocent background - i.e the cheese shop - but the photo ints of something possibly sinister the way that the light does not hit the woman's face and we only see a silhouette adding an alluring quality to the piece.

Lauren Culligan; Anna Gaskel

I choose Anna Gaskel because I really like her color choice and subject matter. I feel all her pictures make you feel a different way. I liked this picture from her wonder series because I loved the shallow depth of field and how you don't know who this girl is or what exactly she is doing.

Beth Hankel - David Hilliard

So. I chose the artist David Hilliard because his pictures do not necessarily tell a story, but instead tell of an emotion or a situation. To reflect this, I created a panoramic of a uprising in a dorm room. With possible spiritual intervention. No, it does not come bigger, and yes, JPG is compressed, but is oh-so-amazing on the interweb. :D

David Hilliard is amazing for his use of lighting, subject, and composition in his photographic panoramas.

Michelle Levy: Evan Baden

I really liked Evan Baden becuase the way he photographs with darkness,

and the way you can only see the girls face with the light from the Nintendo DS

on her face. I photographed my sister with a game boy, to mimick Evan Badens photo.

Matt McVeigh: Garry Winogrand

I chose Garry Winogrand because he has a way of capturing raw, real life sceans through a camera. In his Winogrand's picture, he shows people talking to one another or telling secrets and looking around. In my picture, I show musicians playing music. It is said that music can be another form of communication. Even though the message is often frilled with melodies, the story is still there.

Lora Stann David Hillard

i chose this image because i loved the colors. the flowers are very bright and they seem to go on forever. i like the way it guides your eyes across the whole panoramic. David Hillard was born in 1984 in Lowell Massachusettes. he went to Yale university and the Massachusettes collage of art. his Photography represents relationships, spaces we live in, and the objects we suround ourselves with.

Sunday, June 24, 2007

I chose Elinor Carucci's "Counting Tips' Because I love the lighting, the strong use of color, the subject matter, and the tone of the picture. I think I did the lighting very well, but my angle is slightly different than her's. My picture is also a lot softer than that of Elinor Carucci.

Torrie Caufield: Alexandra Carr

I chose Alexandra Carr as my photographer. I love how her photographs are taken in everyday spots and she is able to convey the fashion in the photgraphs extremely well.
I picked out this photo because of its simplicity and i loved how it was transfered to black and white instead of color, unlike the majority of her work. I think having it in black and white helped enhance the idea of the photo since she looks sort of lost. In my photo, I think i had the angle wrong but had the lighting similar.

Liv Heidenreich: Richard Avedon

-----
I chose to emulate Richard Avedon's "Portrait of Patti Smith". Avedon's work caught my attention with its simplistic nature and way of invoking emotion through the figure. Without a background (in many of his portraits, the figure stands out in front of a solid white 'void'), the subject leaves no shadow. (I had a hard time trying to achieve this). Because I could not find a model with a similar look, I chose to try to emulate Avedon's style of photography rather than try to recreate the exact shot. Several particular aspects of this picture I paid attention to included the lack of shadow, solid background, framing of the figure, awkward hand gesture, blank stare of the model, contrast between the figure's face and hands, clothes, and the background, and the lack of a strong sense of depth with the sleeves.
Unfortunately, the focus on the face does not have the clarity I was aiming for, especially after resizing and compressing (and photoshopping mercilessly!). Hopefully I captured the same feeling as the original.-

Enjoy~

Trisha DeSalvo : Tobin Yelland

I chose Tobin Yelland because he has an interesting style and is good at captuing people in his pictures. I chose this picture of his because the main focus of the image is easily identified. i used myself as the person in the photo and unfortunetly didnt get the focus correct. In his picture i enjoy the sharpness and style.

Ella Schwartz: Anna-Lou Leibovitz

I chose to emulate Annie Leibovitz’s photography because I admire
how personal, or impersonal, her portraits are. In my opinion, her
portrait’s depth is noble. The particular photograph I chose to emulate
was one of the performance artist Karen Finley, by photographing a
similar picture in a warmer lighting in shades of browns of my
performance artist friend Peter Woods. I really enjoy her photograph
because of the use of color, and sharpness, and not because of the booty.
The natural lighting also gives a surreal glow to the seclusion of
Karen Finley facing the back of the chair. - Ella Schwartz

Lauryn Besasie: Adrian Boot

A photograph , to me, is not only beautiful and intriguing because of its quality (light, composition, etc.), but also because of its ability to expose a naked moment with an insight otherwise tainted by any other media. I love Adrian Boot's photograph of The Clash because I love their style of music, and also because of the way it captures the moment. Adrian Boot was a music photographer who worked mainly with new music movements. The fact that this photo is in black and white only adds to its overall success; the gestures, the enviornment, and the details, such as facial expression and the clothing are truely revealed because of the lack of color. I can only hope to emulate it half as good.

Tarryn Meyer on Cig Harvey

* * * * * * * *

I chose this picture by Cig Harvey because I love the use of color. I also chose it because I like what she is doing in the picture, how she's cutting the grass with scissors, and she's looking down. I chose Cig Harvey because I like how playful here pictures are and I like that she doesn't show her face in most of her pictures and it makes me curious as to what she looks like.

Take a look at some of Cig Harvey's work.

Sam O'Brien;Brett Weston

Brett Weston

Sam O'Brien

I chose to recreate Brett Weston's Century Plant photograph for its simplicity. While scanning through Brett's other photos, I saw that he took both close up and distance landscape shots. When I can across Century Plant, it struck me with its simplicity in the lighting and in the shot overall. I felt i could recreate the image's simplicity and creativity.

Fadwa Abulughod_John Sexton.

My emulation:

These are two photographs by John Sexton. I really admire his pictures mainly because he can make pictures so vivid and beautiful without the use of color. I like photos relating to nature and that is why his pictures caught my attention. He has been photographing for many decades and has his work in several books he published. I now admire black and white pictures over colored because black and white helps the viewer study the picture more and it's subject rather than having all the attention be fixated on the color. Sexton also uses light to help make his pictures so beautiful. I really enjoyed looking at his work and I will hopefully enjoy emulating it. =]

Original photograph by John Sexton:

I decided to also use trees as my subject and I wanted to make my picture as similar as possible because I really loved Sexton's use of black and white. I tried taking the pictures in color so I could have the chance to photoshop it to black in white to my liking. I also decided to take the same picture immediately in black and white so I could compare the pictures and choose the best one to emulate with. I found a tree stump that was damaged and decided to take a picture of it in black and white because it looked much more interesting than taking it in color. Whereas when I took it in color, I could identify what it was easily, diminishing the interesting quality of it. In my opinion, taking a photo in black and white helps the viewer study the photo more which makes the picture much more interesting to look at then looking at it in color. Don't get me wrong, color is a beautiful aspect to photography but I would much rather view the subject of the photograph then the color of it.

Jessica Labecki: Eadweard Muybridge

I chose Eaweard Muybridge for my photographer because I like the idea of catching movement. I love how in every frame there is a different movement, yet its still intertwined with the very first. I chose this photograph because he is photographing just a simple interaction between a mother and her child. But in this photograph, it shows the mother lifting her child as a complicated movement.

This is my emulation of Eadweard Muybridge. In my photo, my model, is dancing as opposed to picking up a child, or an object. In Eadweard Muybrindge's photograph(s) the image is very sharp and you can see her body and almost every detail. I really wasn't that much concerned with trying to capture every detail. I was more concerned about capturing her movement. So, hope you enjoy.

Aunnastazia Kromraj-- Vincent Serbin

As i was looking around at different photos not just this one but many others just grabbed me. Everything that is in this one picture is something I would love to learn. I have some pictures some what like this. These types pictures are in away inspiring to me.

Rachel Myers; Cig Harvey

I chose Cig Harvey as my photographer. I love this picture because of the fantastic simplicity. I also love how she matches the colors of the scenery to what she is wearing. This picture really stood out to me because I can relate to it in so many ways. I absolutely love to look up in the sky and just think just like how Cig Harvey is doing in this photograph. The fact that she makes her photos so playful really stands out to me and makes me say; wow! this is a great photo!

Hannah Dunsirn, Phil Borges

I chose Phil Borges. I love the way in all of his pictures he is able to capture so much emotion. Also, I like the way he uses the colors and tones in his photos; he keeps the suddle color of the flesh in his portraits then the rest will be black and white.

Kathleen Gilliland, Jaques-Henri Lartigue

I picked the photographer Jaques-Henri Lartigue. I thought his images were very rich but simple and the fact that he was able to capture them at such a young age amazed me. This image kind of jumped out at me for reasons I'm still trying to discover and guess I'll just try my best to emulate his work.

Xander Niazi. Boogie photography

This photo cought my eye by its utter simplicity, and its incredible beauty. I love birds, i really love birds. The way in which the photograph connects a human to a bird made me just fall in love with this shot. The spot in which the picture was taken is also interesting. To follow the "norm" , people dont tend to see other people carrying a bird down the street. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but the setting, subject , and "prop" ( i would consider it another subject) make a compisition that i could not look past. i love this photo.

This, my friends, is my version of the photograph i chose to emulate.
Catching a wild bird didn't work out so well, so i figured i'd put my own spin on things.
And i also chose to do it in an ally instead of a sidewalk because the ally had more signifigance to me than just any old sidewalk.
I also chose to use the hand of a woman (girl) because they seem, almost, more gracful in a way.
I wish my attempts to catch a real bird would have worked.
But... thats life.
